When Someone You Love Dies

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book where a character dies? Did it make you sad? Was it scary? All living things, from plants to pets to people, die. It's a hard part of life and sometimes hard to understand why. Even though it can be a sad and scary time, it is important you talk to your friends and family when someone you know dies.

What is Grieving?

Grieving and coping are ways people adjust with a difficult change in their lives. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. You might cry or feel angry and that's ok. It's hard when someone you love dies.

Remembering people or pets who have died is one way to keep them a part of us. You can:

  • Look at pictures
  • Visit the grave or a special place
  • Think about how much that person meant to you
  • Draw a picture
  • Write a story or poem 

All these things can help you remember and keep them alive in your heart.

Who Can I Talk To?

Are you wondering if other people in your life will die soon? It's important to talk about any fears or questions you may have instead of hiding them or pretending you aren't scared. Talk to a parent or another grown up you trust. That person will answer your questions the best that they can. At first it can be hard to talk about missing someone, but talking may be the best way to help you start to feel better.

The best we can do is accept death as a part of life. It happens and sometimes it's not fair, but we can't do anything to change that. You may always miss the person, but one day you will be able to think about them and smile at the good times you had together. The more time passes, the less sad you will feel. Remembering the person and the good memories you have will help you feel better.
